Welcome to Millburn Alpacas!
Hello :)
Welcome to the Millburn Alpacas website. We are a fun, friendly and educational Alpaca loving farm and we provide meet and greet sessions for you to come along and interact with our lovely family of Huacaya and Suri Alpacas who would love to meet you. Not only can you come and meet our woolly family, you can also have a spinning and weaving demonstration where we spin our Alpaca fibre into yarn and then weave it into some lovely, cosy products that are available to purchase in our shop. Our demonstration session is approximately 4 hours.
Other fibre craft taster sessions are also available such as intro to rigid heddle weaving and peg loom weaving too. All our weave/spin courses cost £65pp.
Did you know Alpaca wool fibres come in 22 natural colours and have tiny, almost microscopic air pockets in them and these air pockets trap air inside which helps to retain heat. This fascinating structure actually makes Alpaca wool warmer than any other wool. Perfect to keep you cosy when out and about!
Alpaca fleece is also known as ‘Fibre of the Gods’
Some of our Alpaca Wool products…
You’ll fall in love with how cosy these woolly products are once you have a feel of the Alpaca fibres and their ability to retain heat. That’s what keeps our woolly family nice and cosy during the coldest, harshest Scottish weather!
Alpaca Facts
Alpacas have been domesticated for between 6000 and 9000 years, the originated in South America where the Incas prized them for their fleece, they are still a main source of income for some Peruvian farmers.
Huacaya alpacas are the most recognised with their cute teddy bear fluffy looks, their fleece is perfect for knitting and weaving .
Suri alpacas have a fibre that grown in long silky lustrous locks, it is perfect for weaving scarves as its very lightweight and has a lovely drape, it is also used to make dolls hair, we sell locks in 50g bunches, although larger quantities can be purchased.
Fibre of the Gods
We only use the best parts of the fleece for our hats and scarves, this comes from the blanket/saddle area, the belly and leg fibre can be used for mulching plants , repairing gateways and bird nesting material although we only use dark colours for this as the light colours would make the nests too visible to predators.
Alpacas are sheared once a year, this is necessary for their welfare and to avoid heatstroke. Can you imagine how hot they get under those heavy fleeces?
Other Talents
Alpacas make great livestock guards protecting sheep flocks and also poultry they are becoming more popular for this purpose. It has to be said that they need to be carefully selected as not all want to guard. They have an alarm call that they send out at the threat of a fox or even a dog walking too close their boundary .
We collect the poo from the fields, this can be used for the garden, no need to compost it, you can also make alpaca tea for your houseplants. Just add some poo beans to water and mix well. We sell it in large bags for £5 .
